Sino-Ukrainian Ties Progressing Well: Ukrainian FM

Marked achievements have been made in China-Ukraine relations and their bilateral partnership has matured and is stable, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoly Maximovich Zlenko in Beijing on Tuesday.

Bilateral exchanges and cooperation
Marked achievements have been made in China-Ukraine relations and their bilateral partnership has matured and is stable, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoly Maximovich Zlenko in Beijing on Tuesday.

Zlenko made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

He said since Ukraine and China established diplomatic relations on January 4, 1992, the two have increased exchanges and cooperation in the political, trade, economic, scientific and technological, and cultural and educational sectors.

Ukraine and China have cooperated effectively in the international arena, he said, stressing that Ukraine is willing to elevate bilateral friendly relations to a higher level.

He said the achievements are embodied in their expanding bilateral trade, with the bilateral trade volume in the first ten months of last year reaching 700 million U.S. dollars, up 60 percent on the same period of 2000.

China has become one of the top five trading partners of Ukraine, he said, stressing the great potential for cooperation in aviation, space flight, machine building and agriculture has not yet been tapped.

More investment to Ukraine welcomed
He went on to say that the excellent economic situation in Ukraine provides many investment opportunities for business people from other countries, including China. He hopes more Chinese business people will explore the Ukrainian market.

He also said that he was impressed with the remarkable achievements China has made in the past decade.

    1. Review of the relations between the two countries

    On January 4, 1992, Chinese representative Wang Jinqing and Ukrainian representative Makarevich signed a statement formally establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries. The bilateral relations of the two nations since then has been developing smoothly and the leaders of the two countries frequently exchanged visits.

    The agreements signed between the two countries have exceeded 30 covering fields in economy and trade, science and technology, military technology, culture and sports, health, post and telecommunications and environmental protection. The volume of bilateral trade in the first half of 1999 reached US$210 millions, an increase of 77.1% compared with the previous year. The number of enterprises solely owned by China and joint ventures in Ukraine has exceeded 60 with a registered capital of US$ 10 millions. Many regions of the two nations are enjoying an active contacts and 14 Chinese provinces, cities and prefectures have established good-neighborly relations with their counterparts in Ukraine.
