China Set up Supervisory Committee for 2008 Olympic Games

A 21-member Supervisory Committee, composed of senior officials from Chinese ministries, has been established to supervise the preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

A 21-member Supervisory Committee, composed of senior officials from Chinese ministries, has been established to supervise the preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Li Zhilun, Vice-Minister of Supervision, leads the SupervisoryCommittee with other members coming from Chinese National Audit Office, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Construction, State Development Planning Commission and State Sports General Administration.

The Committee, which was officially set up on January 26, also involves deputies of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress and Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

"This committee is highly professional and has wide representation," Zhang Haifeng, a top publicity official of Beijing organizing committee, said on Wednesday.

The Supervisory Committee will exercise its supervision throughthe supervision & auditing department under the organizing committee.

Another supervisory department will also be set up to oversee the construction of venues and facilities for the Olympics.

The complete set of preparatory work for Beijing 2008 Olympic Gameswill be handled in three phases in the seven years to come. The first phase covers a period from October 2001 to the first half of the year 2003. The second phase, from the second half of the year 2003 to the first half of 2006, is the stage for full-scale construction. The third phase refers to that extending from the second half of the year 2006 up to the very moment prior to the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games.

A preparatory office of the organizing committee for the 29th Olympic Games was set up on August 7,2001, kicking off the seven-year-long preparation for the 2008 Games.

Beijing vice mayor Liu Jingmin, who heads the office, listed three major tasks for the office.
