Sri Lankan Peace Talks Likely to be Held in Soon

Talks on Sri Lankan peace negotiations between the government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels with Norwegian facilitation will commence in the near future, hopefully in March or April, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

Talks on Sri Lankan peace negotiations between the government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels with Norwegian facilitation will commence in the near future, hopefully in March or April, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

According to a press release by the Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore and available on Monday, Wickremesinghe who conclude four-day working visit to Singapore on Sunday, had elaborated on the humanitarian aspect of the issue.

Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Senior Minister LeeKuan Yew expressed hope of a negotiated settlement for peace in the country.

Wickremesinghe explained the role played by the Norwegian government as a facilitator for peace process in the country.

Discussions were also held on the Sri Lankan economy and measures to be adopted to develop it. Wickremesinghe expressed the view that it hoped to concentrate on developing ties with South Asia and India in particular.
