A change is to be made of Beijing's old energy structure. Coal as a conventional energy is to be replaced by such clean energy types as natural gas and electricity following market rule according to sources from the "2002 Energy Environment Beijing International Symposium" lately held.

Beijing's energy consumption points to a total of over 41 million tons of standard coal in 2000, of which coal and hard coke took up 74.2 percent forming the main cause of pollution to Beijing's atmosphere and local environment. Effective measures will be adopted to bring about a change in this state of things in Beijing

To be specific, 500 million cubic meters of natural gas will be moved in to basically put an end to all civilian and industrial use of coal as fuel throughout the whole municipality of Beijing. Since putting in use its first Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia natural gas transportation line it has already set about building its second pipeline alongside the first one under operation. So far, it has as many as 349 million USD of loan from the World Bank used for its second phase project in bringing an improved environment in Beijing. Beijing has also set out the task by 2008 that 80 percent of its transit vehicles and taxis use clean fuel.

Beijing's electricity consumption by 2008 is to grow to an annual amount about 42 percent from current 29 percent according to an estimate made. Beijing is bountifully endowed with solo energy supply, geothermal energy, bioenergy and other renewable energies. A comprehensive use of these energies has been planned. According to architects, 20 percent of electric supply for Olympic Park's lighting will come from wind force. Geothermal power will make an indispensable energy supply to a floorspace of over 400,000 square meters for heating and air conditioning; solo energy will be used for 80 to 90 percent of street lights in and around all Olympic structures under planning.
