A senior official of the US Defense Department said Wednesday the United States would probablyhave four prototype interceptors capable of destroying long-range missiles in place by September 2004.

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said this at an appropriations sub-committee of Senate.

The United States plans to build silos for the interceptors at Fort Greeley, Alaska, about 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks.

According to an estimate earlier this year by the CongressionalBudget Office, a land and sea based missile defense system would cost the US between 23 billion and 64 billion US dollars by 2015.

Last year, the US abrogated the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty signed with the former Soviet Union, a move that has provoked strong opposition from other countries.
