Corrupt Official Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

Former provincial official Jiao Zhiren, 55, was sentenced to life imprisonment Thursday in east China's Shandong Province for taking bribes worth more than 1.6 million yuan (194,000 U.S. dollars).

Former provincial official Jiao Zhiren, 55, was sentenced to life imprisonment Thursday in east China's Shandong Province for taking bribes worth more than 1.6 million yuan (194,000 U.S. dollars).

Jiao, former director of the Shandong provincial supply and marketing co-operative, was also deprived of political rights and 140,000 yuan of private property.

According to the verdict made by the Dongying City Intermediate People's Court, Jiao had asked for or taken 222 bribes amounting to 1.609 million yuan form 1989 to 2000 period when he respectively acted as the mayor of Laizhou City, vice-mayor of Yantai City, and secretary of Yantai City Committee of Political Science and Law.
