Chinese Premier Confident of Future of HK, Macao

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in Beijing Friday that the central government will continue its support to the governments of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions SAR) in securing prosperity, stability and development.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said here Friday that the central government will continue its support to the governments of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions SAR) in securing prosperity, stability and development.

The future of Hong Kong and Macao will be bright and beautiful, he said.

He made the remarks at a discussion of Hong Kong and Macao members of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The Premier spoke highly of the achievements in implementing the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong is governed by people of Hong Kong", "Macao is governed by people of Macao" and a high degree of autonomy since the founding of the two SARs.

The situation in Hong Kong and Macao is on the whole good and the central government is satisfied with their work, the premier said, adding that the CPPCC members from Hong Kong and Macao have made great contributions to local social stability and economic development.

Zhu expressed the hope that the CPPCC members would continue to support the chief executives and SAR governments and help secure a long-term prosperity and stability.

The closer relations with the more open and more vigorous economy of the mainland after it has become a WTO member will provide Hong Kong with new space for development, the premier said.

He praised Macao for its social stability, improved social order and rehabilitative economic recovery under the leadership of the Macao SAR government headed by Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah.

The proper handling of the opening of gambling by the Macao SAR government has laid a solid foundation for realizing a sustainable development of the local economy and for realizing long-term social stability.

Li Ruihuan, chairman of the CPPCC Ninth National Committee, was also present at the discussion.
