Chinese president Jiang Zemin Friday urged Taiwan authorities to recognize the "one China principle" so as to reopen cross-Straits dialogues as soon as possible for improved cross-Straits exchanges, and for eventual peaceful reunification of the country at an early date.

That position remains the mainland's consistent policy, said Jiang when joining a group discussion by native Taiwanese deputies to the ongoing Fifth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC).

Jiang said the principle is the basis for realizing peaceful reunification of the country, and Taiwan authorities are urged to accept the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one country, and the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity are inseparable.

Jiang said he made public that point two years ago, and the policy remains unchanged that dialogues and negotiations between the two sides across the Straits can be resumed either in Taiwan or in the mainland.

Jiang called on both sides of the Straits to work together and seize the opportunity arising from their membership of the World Trade Organization to realize direct exchange of trade, air and shipping services and postal services.

He said it is universally acknowledged that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China, and the mainland will, as always, follow the basic line of "peaceful reunification, 'one country, two systems'" for the overall interests of the Chinese nation, and the fundamental interests of the compatriots on both sides of the Straits.

After reviewing briefly the achievements China has made during the past two decades, Jiang Zemin said the Chinese government and people are determined and are capable of solving the Taiwan issue at an earlier date and complete the task of reuniting the motherland.

He warned that "Taiwan Independence" will naturally incur disaster.

It has been the consensus of the compatriots on both sides of the Straits that only after reunification of the two sides can both sides develop and prosper altogether.
