Defense Minister of Madagascar General Marcel Ranjeva has offered his resignation to President Didier Ratsiraka, said a government official here on Saturday.

"The president late last night received a letter of resignation from General Ranjeva," said the official.

The president will then name Ranjeva's successor after accepting the resignation, the official added.

Ranjeva presented his resignation hours after opposition leader Marc Ravalomanana installed another officer to the same post in his rival "government", said the official.
