China Spreads Use of Lethal Injection in Execution Cases
China is spreading the use of lethal injection in death execution of condemned criminals, a civilized way of law enforcement. The use of lethal injection in death execution conforms to the Criminal Procedure Law. It has proved that lethal injection has received favorable response from both condemned criminals and their relatives and from all quarters of the society.
Vice-President Liu Jiachen of the Supreme People's Court said Sunday that China is spreading the use of lethal injection in death execution of condemned criminals, a civilized way of law enforcement.
Liu said that the use of lethal injection in death execution conforms to the Criminal Procedure Law. "We began to introduce such a way of execution after successful experiments on animals".
According to Liu, some intermediate courts that have the conditions have begun to use lethal injection. In places where the conditions are lacking, it needs the help of governments to build the execution facilities so that the civilized way of law enforcement may be spread throughout the country.
"We are strict in controlling death penalty and the number of death sentences is limited. Execution by lethal injection is a full expression of civilized way of law enforcement we have always pursue," Liu said.
It has proved that lethal injection has received favorable response from both condemned criminals and their relatives and from all quarters of the society, he said.
Lethal injection
When lethal injection is conducted, the inmate is secured with lined ankle and wrist restraints to a gurney in the preparation room outside the chamber. Cardiac monitor leads and a stethoscope are attached. Two saline intravenous lines are started, one in each arm, and the inmate is covered with a sheet.
Sodium Thiopental causes unconsciousness.
Pancuronium Bromide stops respiration.
Potassium Chloride stops heart.
Lethal injection was first given legal status as a way of execution of capital punishment on January 1, 1997.
Under China's amended Criminal Procedure Law, which became effective on January 1, 1997, capital punishment may be done by shooting, lethal injection and other methods. >>details
