State Council Wu Yi Arrives in Tehran for Visit

Wu Yi, a member of China's State Council, leading a government delegation, arrived here Saturday afternoon for a five-day visit to Iran.

Wu Yi, a member of China's State Council, leading a government delegation, arrived in Tehran Saturday afternoon for a five-day visit to Iran.

While being accorded a warm welcome at the airport by Iranian officials concerned, Madam Wu distributed a written statement highlighting the bilateral relations of friendship and cooperation between China and Iran.

The bilateral relations between China and Iran have been developed in various fields, Wu noted, expressing China's willingness to explore great potentials in economic cooperation with Iran to deepen their existing good relations of friendship and cooperation.

The Chinese official believed that the traditional friendship would be surely strengthened and developed as long as the two sides continue their cooperation.

During her stay in Iran, Madam Wu will attend the 11th meeting of the China-Iran Joint Economic Commission and a ceremony marking the completion of a China-built subway line here. She will also meet with Iranian President Mohammad Khatami and some other high- ranking officials to explore ways of boosting bilateral relations, especially in trade and economic fields.

According to a local official report, the volume of trade between China and Iran stood at some 3.3 billion U.S. dollars last year, which included about 2.4 billion dollars worth of Iranian exports and some 889 million dollars of imports from China.

Iran is the first stop of Madam Wu's six-nation Mideast tour, which will also take her to Lebanon, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
