Indonesian Legislators Hope Megawati's China Trip Success
Indonesian legislators in an interview with Xinhua expressed their hope that the forthcoming visit to China by President Megawati Soekarnoputri will improve further the relationship between the two countries. Megawati will pay a state visit to China from March 24 to 28 at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
"Indonesia and China relationship has been good so far. However, we keep on trying to make it better and more beneficial for both," the House of Representatives Vice Speaker Sutarjo Suryoguritno said.
The visit would be aimed at seeking improvement of bilateral relationship, he added.
According to the schedule, Megawati will pay a state visit to China from March 24 to 28 at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
Visit of Great Importance
Commenting on the visit, member of the House Commission I overseeing international affairs Aisyah Aminy said the visit will have very important meaning as it combines two highly populous countries, more than one billion people in China and more than 200 million in Indonesia.
Economic Front as Main Agenda
"Both countries need to share common ideas to help each other move forward amid international communities," she said, emphasizing that the economic front should become the main agenda in the bilateral summit.
The most important thing for both countries is an awareness of mutual needs that will lead them to a common desire of closer cooperation.
International Cooperation in Asia
"The cooperation will show the world that international cooperation grows enormously in Asia, so that the region no longer be underestimated by other powerful countries, primarily the United States," she said.
Aminy sees that there is no stumbling block on the way Indonesia and China will go along hand-in-hand.
Head of the House Commission II Teras Narang explained that the trip actually had been scheduled quite long ago, as Indonesia always saw China as one of its most important partner.
"I do hope that the trip will bring better and closer cooperation of both countries in the future," he stressed.
Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji in Jakarta stressed the need for China and Indonesia to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in his talks with Indonesian President Megawati. Both sides agreed to further promote the exchanges and cooperation in various spheres and signed four memoranda of understanding on encouraging more assistance and cooperation.
The relationship between Indonesia and China has been getting stronger since 1990s and it will benefit both countries, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayudha said in commenting the forthcoming visit to China by President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
