China handed over the urgent humanitarian assistance that it promised to provide to Afghanistanat a ceremony Tuesday in Kabul.

The documents on the handover of the assistance were signed by Zhang Min, charge d'affaires of the Chinese embassy in Kabul and Ferozudin Feroze, deputy public health minister of the Afghan interim administration.

Speaking at the delivery ceremony, Zhang said China, as one of Afghanistan's neighboring countries, has paid much attention to its peace and reconstruction and has made efforts, together with the international community, to contribute to the process.

China is willing to further its friendly relations with Afghanistan on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, and will provide due support and assistance to Afghanistan in its reconstruction, he said.

In his speech, Feroze said that many years of war in Afghanistan have damaged much of the country's infrastructure, particularly in the public health sector, and the medical equipment and medicine provided by the Chinese government will help improve the conditions of hospitals in the country, particularly those in Kabul.

China announced that it would provide urgent humanitarian assistance worth 30 million yuan (about 3.6 million U.S. dollars) to the Afghan interim administration, when the latter was established in December last year.

The assistance includes medical equipment, medicine, sports facilities and stationery, all of which are badly needed in the war-torn Afghanistan.

The first batch of China's assistance to Afghanistan arrived here on Monday morning, and the remainder of the assistance will be airlifted to Kabul in the next few days.
