March 26 saw the kick-off of the groundwork for the "West Lake International Conference Center" near the bank of the Qiangtanjiang River. At a cost about 2 billion yuan and covering an area of 980 mu (around 65.5 hectares), the project is now the biggest of its kind planned in China, which is expected to help improve conference facilities in Hangzhou city.

Located in the Qiangtangjiang State Tourist and Holiday Resort, the conference center is jointly built by Shanghai Zhongrong Estate Development Co. Ltd. and France-based CCM Group. With a gross floor space of 490,000 square meters, it consists of a convention center, exhibition center, central plaza, four-star hotel, holiday village and shopping mall. The convention center encompasses an area of 120,000 square meters and embraces more than 30 meeting halls and a 10-language interpretation system. While the exhibition center boasts 7,000 standard display stands.

The whole project will proceed in a step-by-step process, with the main buildings scheduled to finish within two years and the rest all completed by 2006. The conference center, shaped like a butterfly roaming over green mountains and rivers, is a design jointly worked out by French, American and Chinese architects through international bidding.

Hangzhou city is noted for its beautiful scenery and long-standing culture. Situated near Shanghai, it may well establish itself into a city of international conferences and exhibitions, and the new construction is expected to help solve the bottleneck arresting the development of facilities and bring the city closer to its aim.
