China and the Netherlands Wednesday signed a memorandum on a greenhouse project which is to be implemented in Shouguang City in east China's Shandong Province.

The memorandum on the greenhouse project, labeled Activities toBe Implemented Jointly (AIJ) During the Pilot Phase Project was endorsed by China's Ministry of Science and Technology and the Netherlands Minister for Development Cooperation. The two countries agreed to introduce energy-saving technology to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases in rural areas.

Shouguang City Agricultural Committee and a Dutch energy research center will implement the project, which will run for 28 months and cost 1.5 million Dutch guilders.

In 1995, the Conference of the Parties from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted a decision to establish Activities Implemented Jointly under the Pilot Phase, which encourages developed countries to help developing countries limit emissions of greenhouse gases.

China has signed similar documents with Japan and Norway.
