Iranian President Condemns Assassination Bid in Afghanistan

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Tuesday condemned an assassination attempt on Afghan Defense Minister Mohammad Qasim Fahim during a phone conversation with the Afghan Interim leader Hamid Karzai.

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Tuesday condemned an assassination attempt on Afghan Defense Minister Mohammad Qasim Fahim during a phone conversation with the Afghan Interim leader Hamid Karzai.

Khatami condemned the bomb blast which killed four people and wounded about 50 others Monday when an explosive device went off close to a convoy carrying the Fahim in Afghanistan's eastern city of Jalalabad. Fahim narrowly escaped the assassination.

"Those involved in the terrorist bombing are the enemies of Afghanistan and against peace, security and reconstruction of the country," the Iranian president said.

Karzai appreciated Iran's attention to the events of Afghanistanand called for further bolstering bilateral relations.

Earlier in the day, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi also made a telephone call to Fahim to extend greetings for his escape unhurt from the assassination attempt.

Iran, a neighbor to the west and southwest of Afghanistan with acommon border of 950 kilometers, has expressed support for the Interim Afghan Administration and the reconstruction of the war-shattered neighbor while Washington has accused the Islamic Republic of supporting Afghan local warlords to try to overthrow the Karzai regime.
