All vehicles causing noise and pollution will be banned from entering the Bird Islands of Qinghai Lake in northwest China from next month.

Zhang Dehai, vice-director of the national nature reserve administration of Qinghai Lake, said that with the increasing number of visitors to the islands in recent years, the habitat of the birds has been affected by noise and air pollution caused by motor vehicles.

During the breeding period, loud noises frightened the birds and made them abandon their eggs, said Zhang.

In order to solve the problem, the administration has decided to open a special route for visitors and introduce ten environmentally-friendly electric cars for the visitors to travel on the islands.

About Qinghai Lake
Covering an area of over 4,000 square kilometers, Qinghai Lake is also the country's biggest salt-water lake. Located in Qinghai Province, it is famous for the two islands in its northeast: Cormorant Island and Egg Island.

The two islands have plenty of floating grass and schools of fish, offering rich food sources for birds. The islands have become a sanctuary for many species of birds.

Every year, more than 100,000 birds fly to the islands to breed. The islands have become one of China's eight key bird nature reserves.
