Fifty people died and 150 others were injured in the earthquake that rocked the Nahrin region on Friday,a U.N. spokesperson said on Saturday.
Of the people killed, 80 percent are children, Rebecca Richards,the spokesperson, told Xinhua.
However, she declined to explain why so many children have beenkilled.
She said the village of Dawabi, some 30 kilometers southeast ofNahrin in Baghlan province, was completely destroyed. A nearby village, Khojakheder, was severely damaged.
Six other villages were also damaged to a certain extent.
A coordination center was set up in Nahrin on Friday to help the victims. Tents and food were distributed and the wounded were taken to hospitals in Nahrin.
Friday's earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale, was a second powerful quake in three weeks in the same region. A 5.2-degree quake on March 25 claimed 800 to 1,000 lives.
