The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) said on Monday that transgenic crops are experiencing a rapid growth in the world.
The CEPAL said in a report that the United States, Canada and Argentina are the countries that most intensively apply transgenic technology to food production.
As a contrary reaction to transgenic products, the market for organic food product is growing, the report said.
Transgenic food products are those that come from genetically modified crops. Organic food products come from the crops that are not genetically modified.
According to the report, although crops are more abundant, there has not been a considerable drop in the price of transgenic food products due to the high cost of seeds.
The CEPAL said the world's total land used to plant transgenic crops amounted to 45 million hectares in 1996.
Soybean, corn, cotton and cinnamon are the main transgenic crops in the world, the CEPAL said.
It predicted that by 2010, the global transgenic food products market will reach 25 billion U.S. dollars.
