The average life expectancy for residents in Beijing neared 76 years in 2001, according to the Beijing Daily. Statistics from the Beijing Health Bureau show that the average life expectancy in the city hit a record high of 75.85 years in 2001, almost two years more than the 73.88 figure of five years ago.

Experts say the notable rise results from a steady fall in the mortality rate, plus great improvements in hygiene standards and medical services.

Preventive measures against various contagious diseases had also been widely taken in Beijing, and many such diseases were effectively under control, the paper said.

Even in some developed countries, it would usually take over ten years for average life expectancy to rise two years, sources said.
