China Launches Personnel Training Program for the 2008 Olympics

Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) President Yuan Weimin told visiting IOC coordinators on Monday that China has initiated the training program for sports organization and management personnel.

Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) President Yuan Weimin told visiting IOC coordinators on Monday that China has initiated the training program for sports organization and management personnel.

The April 28-May 1 visit by the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s Coordination Commission headed by Hein Verbruggen, is the first since its establishment late last year.

Yuan, also executive president of the Beijing Olympics Organizing Committee (BOCOG), said the BOCOG has worked out the Sports Competition Action Plan and had the priorities of work for this year identified, in line with the IOC Master Plan.

Lou Dapeng, BOCOG sports director and expert in Olympic affairs, has been appointed to be in charge of the planning of all the 2008 sports competitions.

The BOCOG has also had discussions with various International Sports Federations as to the planning and size of the venues. Specialists from the International Equestrian Federation were invited to Beijing to look into the establishment of disease free zone, to pass on the expertise in the preparation of Equestrian competitions, and to assist in the planning of the Equestrian Competitions.

The BOCOG sent a 44-member observation group to the 19th Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. BOCOG officials and staff members were also sent to relevant international sports conferences and such training courses as the Sports Event Management and Organization Seminar in order to tap the knowledge of the organization of international sports competitions.

In the training program for sports organization and management personnel, sports organizers are sent to domestic sports events and overseas study tours in order to help them draw experience in practice and improve their command of foreign languages.

"The COC is also trying to recommend competent staff members for positions in the International Federations (IFs) and give intensified training to the Chinese staff working in the IFs," said the Chinese sports chief.

"The COC is also making attempts to discover and train specialists in sports competition management through public recruiting," he added.
