Chinese Favored for Asian Soccer Awards

Chinese defender Fan Zhiyi and midfielder Li Tie are tipped as favorites to be named as Asia's soccer player of the year.

Chinese defender Fan Zhiyi and midfielder Li Tie are tipped as favorites to be named as Asia's soccer player of the year.

Fan and Li were nominated for the region's top soccer award after helping China qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time, the Asian Football Confederation announced Wednesday. The awards ceremony will be held May 17 in Shanghai.

The other three nominees are Iran's Ali Karimi, Abdullah Al Shehan of Saudi Arabia and Mirdjalal Kasimov of Uzbekistan.

China's head coach Bora Milutinovic is among four men vying for the AFC Coach of the Year award. The others are Nassar Al Johar of Saudi Arabia, Kim Ho of South Korea and Bahrain's Wolfgang Sidka.
