An average of 18,000 children die of measles every year in Kenya, the East African Standard daily reported on Wednesday.
Out of an estimated 1 million children deaths caused by measles worldwide, 48 percent occurs in sub-Saharan Africa, Magdalene Kuria, an official with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), was quoted as saying.
She described measles as a "highly contagious viral disease killing children between the ages of nine months and 14 years".
KRCS has announced that it would join hands with the government in a countrywide measles campaign in which 14 million children will be vaccinated from mid-June.
The campaign, sponsored by the Kenyan Health Ministry, is to get an aid of 100,000 U.S. dollars from the American Red Cross, Kuria said.
Among other organizations to participate in the campaign are the World Health Organization, U.N. Children's Fund, the Canadian International Development Agency and the U.S. Agency for International Development, according to the report.
