SCO Defense Ministers Meet for Anti-Terrorism Fight

The defense ministers of five member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) met Wednesday in Moscow for further cooperation in the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism.

The defense ministers of five member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) met Wednesday in Moscow for further cooperation in the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism.

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov and their counterparts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan also discussed international and regional situation as well as military cooperation among the SCO members.

The ministers praised the regular meeting mechanism among SCO defense ministers and chiefs of general staff. They agreed to establish a senior defense official council to consolidate and develop constructive cooperation in the fields of defense and security.

They also agreed to create a joint expert group which will be responsible for consultations on joint anti-terrorism exercises.

The SCO was established in June 2001 in Shanghai, China, to encourage regional cooperation and coordinate the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism.
