Police confirmed Saturday that they had killed the brother of an Abu Sayyaf leader holding two American hostages in a clash in the southern Philippines.

Police said Shahinon Hapilon died before reaching hospital from shot wounds incurred in a gunbattle with police in a village in the southern city of Zamboanga on Friday night, the ABS-CBN news channel reported.

Hapilon is said to be the younger brother of Abu Sayyaf commander Isnilon Hapilon, whose faction is reportedly holding the American missionary couple Martin and Gracia Burnham and Filipina nurse Ediborah Yap in the neighboring island of Basilan.

Some 1,000 U.S. soldiers are in the southern Philippines participating in joint military exercises that began in late January to help the local military wipe out the Abu Sayyaf group, allegedly linked to the al-Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden, the suspected mastermind of the September 11 attacks on the United States.
