China and Britain should develop a long-term and steady relationship of friendly cooperation based on the principles of equality and mutual trust, Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao said Monday.

During talks with British Deputy Prime Minister and First Secretary of State John Prescott, Wen said the two countries should strengthen cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other fields.

Since the two countries established ambassadorial diplomatic ties 30 yeas ago, bilateral relations have developed rapidly. The frequent exchange of high-level visits in recent years have enhanced mutual understanding and propelled cooperation. Wen said the two sides shared common views and interests on many major issues.

China and Britain complement each other in economic and trade fields, and have potential for further cooperation, he said, adding that China's accession to the World Trade Organization, strategy to develop its western region, and preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games would bring new opportunities for cooperation.

Prescott agreed with Wen on his evaluation of bilateral relations, saying the two countries have cooperated closely in many issues.

He said Britain appreciates China's responsible attitude in dealing with the Asian financial crisis.

He said he was glad to have visited China five times in the past five years, expressing admiration for China's achievements in economic and social development and environmental protection.

Prescott pledged Britain's willingness to further cement its cooperation ties with China in all spheres.

Wen and Prescott also exchanged views on the world summit on sustainable development, and agreed to strengthen coordination andcooperation on the issue.
