Clinton Calls on Japan to Help Create Peace in Middle East

Visiting former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Tuesday asked Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumifor efforts to create peace in the Middle East, Kyodo reported.

Visiting former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Tuesday asked Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumifor efforts to create peace in the Middle East, Kyodo reported.

Clinton was quoted by a Japanese government official as tellingthe prime minister that he hopes Japan will play a role in the peacemaking process. Koizumi reportedly told Clinton that Japan will do its utmost.

But the two did not elaborate, said the official, who joined the meeting.

The former U.S. president also encouraged Koizumi, noting that Japan has great power, the official said. Koizumi has been implementing structural reforms since he took office in April lastyear.

Clinton reportedly told Koizumi that it was astonishing that Japan has maintained financial wealth despite the lack of growth in its economy for the past 10 years.

Koizumi was quoted as telling Clinton he will keep carrying outhis reforms, mentioning a recent Japanese government report that said the economy has bottomed out.
