Tianjin Customs' officers have seized 100 smuggled cars worth 25 million yuan (3 million US dollars).

Customs officers say the cars were found during recent check on car import certificates.

These certificates were obviously forged, as they had no customs' numbers.

More than 70 of the 100 smuggled cars were made in Japan, as Japanese cars are highly demanded on the Chinese market, customs officers said.

The seized cars were mainly imported between 1995 and 1997. The number of imported cars with counterfeit certificates has dropped significantly since 1998 when Tianjin Customs and local vehicle management department computerized details of imported cars.
