The growth of ties between China and Britain boasts a good momentum thanks to the concerted efforts of both sides, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Tuesday in Beijing.

Zhu, meeting with British Deputy Prime Minister and First Secretary of State John Prescott, described the bilateral exchanges and cooperation as "fruitful and effective".

Britain was the leading investor to China and the second biggest trade partner among EU members. Sino-British cooperation proceeded smoothly in science and technology, finance and insurance, environmental protection and cultural areas, Zhu said, adding that China was satisfied with such growth.

He believed that prospects for Sino-British cooperation had broadened after China's accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Prescott, in response, expressed his satisfaction with the growth of bilateral ties. He congratulated China on its WTO entry and Beijing's successful bid for the Olympic Games in 2008. He said Britain was willing to participate in China's modernization construction by strengthening bilateral economic and trade links.

He said that Britain attached importance to the world summit on sustained development due to be held in South Africa and hoped to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China on the issue.

Zhu said that China had made preparatory work for the upcoming summit and would like to keep close contacts with Britain on the issue.
