Per Capita GDP Targets US$6,000
Mayor Liu Qi said Tuesday at the congress that he is confident of the target that the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) would rise to 6,000 US dollars by 2008, doubling the current figure for the Chinese capital.

Compared with the estimated national economic growth rate of 7 percent during the 2001-05 period, Beijing's targeted 9 percent is practical, based on its healthy economic development in recent years, he said.

China's accession to the World Trade Organization and Beijing's successful bid for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games are two major factors that will boost Beijing's economic development, the mayor said.

Beijing's per capita GDP target of 6,000 US dollars was formerly set for the year 2010.

The city witnessed an average annual growth rate of 10.3 percent in the last five years, with the contribution of the service industry to the economic growth rising to 58.9 percent last year.

More Ambitious Goals
Beijing will take the lead in China to achieve modernization in the next five years, with an annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 9 percent, Jia Qinglin, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, pledged last Friday.

When presenting his work report to the city's Ninth Party Congress, Jia vowed to increase the income of both urban and rural residents by 6 percent to greatly enhance their standard of living.

Urban residents will enjoy a housing area of 20 square metres per person at that time, Jia predicted. "A solid foundation is expected to be laid in the next five years to build Beijing into a firstrate international metropolis", Jia said. In Detail>>>
