A South Korean high-ranking official Saturday reaffirmed the country's consistent position against Japan's possession of nuclear weapons.

The unidentified official was quoted by local media as saying that Japan's nuclear arming would be "detrimental to the security in the region." He said it is South Korean government persistent stand that any readjustment in Japan's defense stance should contribute to regional security and be conducted with transparency.

The South Korean government has noted the fact that Japan has so far adhered to its three non-nuclear principles, which was just reiterated by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Friday, the official said.

The three non-nuclear principles include not possessing, manufacturing or introducing nuclear weapons on Japan's territory.

According to local media report, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda told reporters on Friday that theoretically Japan could have nuclear weapons. This prompted Prime Minister Koizumi to assure that Japan has no intention to change its three non-nuclear principles.

Koizumi was in Seoul on Friday for the opening ceremony of the World Cup co-hosted by the two countries.
