Albania Hopes to join EU: Albanian PM

Albanian prime minister Pandeli Majko stressed here Saturday that his country is making efforts tojoin the European Union (EU) as soon as possible.

Albanian prime minister Pandeli Majko stressed here Saturday that his country is making efforts tojoin the European Union (EU) as soon as possible.

In a recent interview with Chinese reporters, Majko said that the entry into the EU is a wish shared by all the Albanian partiesand the industrial and business communities.

As a member of Europe, the country already enjoys broad links with other European countries, he said.

Meanwhile, Albania is playing an important part in political affairs and economic development in the Balkan region, the 34-year-old prime minister said.

Albania has signed a free trade agreement with Macedonia and isnegotiating with Serbia and Montenegro for similar accords. The country will discuss free trade issues with Bulgaria and Turkey, said the prime minister.

On domestic issues, he said that the political crisis was over and the country is focusing on economic development.

Majko, who took office in February, said his new government hasmade new economic development plans.

In the new plans, the priorities are to accelerate the privatization of banks, oil companies and social insurance organizations, invest more in infrastructure, build roads to ease traffic in the east-west artery and roads to connect Serbia, Montenegro and Greece.

On China-Albanian relations, he said leaders of both countries value the bilateral relations and Albanian president Rexhep Meidani and former president Sali Berisha both visited China.

He said that Albania is willing to work with China to boost thefriendly relations to a new high.

Albania attaches importance to economic and trade cooperation with China although the trade volume is not very large so far, he added.
