The intrusion of exotic species has seriously damaged ecological environment and economic development in China and has even influenced the normal production and life of the people.

In view of the fact, China will continue to stick to the strict quarantine system when introducing forest species into China so as to prevent effectively the intrusion of harmful living things.

As usually happens, once the exotic species succeeds in intruding into the country it is very difficult to eradicate it and will cost a hell's lot to control its outspread.

In view of the forest insects that plagued seriously the forests in China during the recent years, almost all of them were intruders from outside of China.

To date, the first recorded case of nematodiasis for coniferous trees was carried into China from Japan.

Since August 1998, the Chinese quarantine has intercepted hundreds of times the nematodiasis from the wooden packing cases dispatched from the United States, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

Along with China's entry into the WTO and the globalization of economy and trade, the danger for nematodiasis and other harmful species to spread into China from foreign countries will surely be further intensified.

Zhu Like, deputy director of the State Administration of Forestry pointed out that in face of the new situation for opening up wider after China's entry into the WTO, China will make a careful study on it and work out corresponding policies by adopting effective measures to fight against the intrusion of harmful exotic insects.

He continued that China would strengthen the regulation and system construction for controlling the approval of the species introduction from abroad, improve the regulation system so as to enhance the approval procedure of species introduction in a more scientific way.

China, by organizing some personnel, is going to make a special study on it in order to map out a list of introduced species and lay a heavy hand on incurring new species.

To achieve this, China is to strengthen the risk assessment on the danger and potential danger of harmful living things from abroad and also to work out a qualitative and quantitative analysis on the danger and potential danger of pests from abroad, according to Zhu.

China will also set up an alert system to trace the species intrusion so that it can secure a discovery on time of the intrusion by any new species, nipping it out when still in the bud.

By now, the monitoring and reporting network based mainly on the 510 State-level monitoring and reporting centers for the prevention of forest pests in the major forests of the country has almost come into shape, and the construction of another 490 centers will soon be kicked off.
