Sri Lanka's Mainstream Tamil Political Party President Dies

The president of Sri Lanka's leading mainstream Tamil political party the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) and Member of Parliament, Murugesu Sivasithamparam, died on Wednesday at the age of 79 after a brief illness, local media reports said on Thursday.

The president of Sri Lanka's leading mainstream Tamil political party the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) and Member of Parliament, Murugesu Sivasithamparam, died on Wednesday at the age of 79 after a brief illness, local media reports said on Thursday.

Sivasithamparam, an Attorney-at-Law, entered Parliament in 1960 from the Uddipidy electorate contesting from the All Ceylon Tamil Congress. He later joined the TULF and was deputy speaker of Parliament from 1965 to 1970.

He held the position of the leader of the TULF for 15 years. He left behind his wife and two children -- a son and a daughter.
