Association for Ethnic Unity, Progress Founded

An association aiming to promote economic and social development in ethnic regions and to unite overseas Chinese people of ethnic minorities origin was formed in Beijing Sunday.

An association aiming to promote economic and social development in ethnic regions and to unite overseas Chinese people of ethnic minorities origin was formed in Beijing Sunday.

The association is headed by Jiang Jiafu, vice-minister of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission.

It plans to encourage people from China and overseas to participate in the go-west movement and to support the development of ethnic groups with small populations.

It will also invite experts to carry out research on important ethnic issues and offer advice and make proposals to assist development.

The association's honorary heads include vice-chairmen of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Wang Guangying, Buhe, Tomur Dawamat, and vice chairmen of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee Ngapoi Ngawang Jigme, Zhao Nanqi, and Bai Lichen, and former vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Fei Xiaotong.
