Visiting Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal stressed on Tuesday that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's proposal on a timetable for a Palestinian statehood is important to the settlement of the Mideast crisis.

"I believe that Mubarak's proposal will have a profound impact (on the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict)," Faisal told reporters after talks with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Maher.

Terming his talks with Maher as "constructive and fruitful," Faisal said that his visit to Egypt was part of coordination between the two countries.

Faisal, who arrived here earlier in the day, also made a phone call to Mubarak to express his appreciation for Mubarak's recent U.S. trip.

For his part, Maher said that he briefed Faisal on the outcome of Mubarak's U.S. visit aimed at pushing forward the moribund Mideast peace process.

During his visit to the United States, Mubarak stressed the needto set a timetable for establishing a Palestinian state. However, the proposal was turned down by U.S. President George W. Bush.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia, two heavyweights in the Mideast region, have constantly coordinated their stances on ways to seek a way outof the current Mideast crisis.
