Ambassador Holds Reception in Honor of Chinese Naval Fleet in Alexandria

Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liu Xiaoming held a reception at Alexandria, Egypt on Saturday in honor of a visiting Chinese naval fleet.

Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liu Xiaoming held a reception at Alexandria, Egypt on Saturday in honor of a visiting Chinese naval fleet.

The ambassador said at the opening ceremony that the current visit to Egypt by a Chinese naval fleet, the first ever in the history of Sino-Egyptian exchanges, demonstrates a deep friendship of the Chinese people and armed forces toward their Egyptian counterparts, and will help promote mutual understanding between the two countries' naval forces.

The fleet, composed of a missile guided destroyer, the Qingdao, and a supply ship, the Taicang, took up a berth on Friday at the start of a five-day visit to Egypt, part of its round-the-world voyage.

The two vessels with more than 500 crew members on board weighedanchor at a naval port in China's eastern port city of Qingdao on May 15 and have visited Singapore before arrival here.

Noting that the Chinese people are peace-loving ones, and the Chinese government pursues an independent foreign policy of peace, Liu said that the purpose of building up the Chinese army is just to defend China.

"China does not and will not pose any threat to any country, andChina's development will only help world peace," he stressed, adding that the Chinese fleet's trip around the globe, the first inthe Chinese Navy's history, is sending a signal of peace and friendship to the whole world.

Calling all crew members aboard the two vessels messengers of friendship, Ding Yiping, commander of the North China Sea Fleet, said at the reception that the fleet's trip embodies China's willingness to promote friendship and cooperation with the rest of world.

Ding, who is in charge of the fleet's operations, also expressedhis hope that exchanges between the armed forces of China and Egyptwill develop further in the years to come.

Hussein el-Harmeel, head of the Egyptian Navy's Organization Department, on the behalf of the navy's commander Tamer Abdel Alime, said that Egypt and China, two old civilizations, have had fruitful cooperation in various areas over the past decades, addingthat the Chinese naval fleet's visit will play a positive role in enhancing friendship and cooperation between the two countries and peoples.
