China and Lithuania agreed Monday that they are going to redouble their efforts to promote economic cooperation and exchanges in all areas.
The two countries reached the agreement during a meeting between visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas.
Jiang, who arrived here Sunday on a state visit, the first everby a Chinese head of state to this Baltic country, said that thanks to the joint efforts by the two governments, exchanges and cooperation between the two nations had increased in recent years,especially in the fields of culture, education, journalism, trade and economy.
He said that with China's entry into the World Trade Organization, the Chinese market would be further opened up to theoutside world. Given the new opportunities, the Chinese president said, governments of both China and Lithuania should encourage andfacilitate their enterprises to expand their businesses in the other country's market.
Brazauskas said that although Lithuania and China are far away from each other geographically, the Lithuanian government is willing to actively promote cooperation with China in all fields.
Noting that discussions are now underway between the two countries concerning exchanges and cooperation in customs, sea ports and other areas, the prime minister expressed his hope that agreements in these areas could be reached soon.
