A total of 17 people in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were killed by floods, landslides and mudflows in the past few days, vice chairman of theregion Xiong Yinhui said Friday.

Rainstorms have hit Xinjiang on 12 occasions so far this year with record rainfalls, according to the local weather department.

Some 28 counties and cities have been affected by flooding. Water levels in a dozen major rivers are above the danger line. Melting snow in mountainous areas is expected to increase the amount of water in the rivers by 20 percent.

Xiong estimated the economic losses caused by flooding at 750 million yuan (90 million US dollars).
