Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao has encouraged the officials and residents in the flood-hit areas in the northwest Shaanxi Province to make joint efforts to prevent further losses, resume production and rebuild homes.

Wen said this during a recent three-day inspection tour of Shaanxi. Wen, also head of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, was sent on the tour on June 20-22 by President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji.

The devastating floods and landslides in Shaanxi Province earlier in June were caused by torrential rain.

In Fuping County, the most affected area, 132 people were reported dead and 105 are missing.

Wen visited the farmers' temporary accommodation in the county to check their losses and urged local officials to ensure sufficient food, drinking water, clothing and safe lodging for the people.

He also inspected roads, embankments, water plants and other infrastructure damaged by the flood, including a 150-meter-long bridge on the Longhai Railway, whose damage disrupted traffic on the railway for 13 hours.

The vice-premier and a group of school age children in a makeshift classroom together read aloud, "I am Chinese. I love my country. I will overcome all hardships to rebuild my hometown."

Wen reminded local flood control officials the flood season hadjust started and more rainfall could be expected soon.

"The safety of the people should be the top priority," said thevice-premier, who called on the local government to step up farmland development, improve infrastructure and readjust the economic structure.
