More than 200 people were killed in central Tanzania district of Dodoma on Monday morning when a passenger train carrying more than 1,000 people derailed, local media reported.

The train, traveling from Dar es Salaam to the northwestern city of Kigoma, was climbing a steep hill when it rolled backwardssuddenly, went off the rail track and hit a cargo train on the nearby track.

As many as 280 people were injured and many of them were in serious condition, making it possible for the death toll to continue rising, railroad officials said.

Rescue workers rushed to the site after the accident, sending those injured to hospitals and trying to search for any survivors from the damaged carriages.

President Benjamin Mkapa, accompanied by local officials, visited the regional hospitals where the injured were given emergency treatment.

The deadly crash might be caused by an engine failure of the passenger train, informed sources said.

The tragedy was the second fatal accident in recent days after 42 miners died from suffocation in a tanzanite gemstone mine near northern city of Arusha due to the failure of an air-supplying compressor last week.
