Alfred Moisiu Elected as Albanian President
Alfred Moisiu, a veteran of World War Two and a famous politician in Albania, was elected Monday afternoon by the parliament as the country's President.

Under Albania's constitution, Moisiu need more than 84 pro-votes from 140 members of Parliament to be elected as the head of state. He finally gained the supports of 97 deputies.
Moisiu was born in Shkoder on December 1, 1929. During 1943-1945 he took part in the War for Albania's Liberation. In 1948 he graduated from the military engineering school in Saint Petersburgand later the Academy of Military Engineering in Moscow, where he was awarded the "Golden Medal".
From 1971 to 1982 and 1994-1997, he was appointed twice as deputy minister of defense.
In 1994 he founded the Albanian North Atlantic Association and was elected as its president. He knows Russian, Italian and English.
Moisiu will swear on July 24 as Albanian President for a five-year term.
