Strong Earthquake Rattles Northeastern China

A strong earthquake shook northeastern China early Saturday and was felt as far away as Beijing. There were no immediate reports of deaths.

An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale jolted Wangqing County of China's Jilin province, at 43.5 degrees north latitude and 130.6 degrees east longitude, at 01:19 (Beijing Time) Saturday.

The quake was felt in most regions of the province, the neighboring provinces, or even Zhejiang Province about 2,000 kilometers away in the eastern coast of the country. No casualties or damages have been reported yet.

Little Possibility of Ruinous Quake
Experts from the seismological bureau of Jilin Province agreed Saturday that there exists little possibility exists for ruinous earthquake to jolt the province in the near future.

Dong Jichuan, director of the provincial seismological bureau, said that Jilin Province is located in a site unlikely to be hit by frequent earthquakes. Statistics show that only three strong earthquakes measuring 5.6, 5.2, 7.0 on the Richter scale jolted the province in 1960, 1966 and 1999, respectively.
