Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen Sunday expressed his all-time confidence over the future of Hong Kong, saying that glorious progress will be made in the implementation of "One Country, Two Systems" principle in the Special Administrative Region (SAR).

The second-term government of the Hong Kong SAR led by Tung Chee Hwa will surely bring Hong Kong to a new development stage by summing up experience in the past five years, uniting all walks of life in Hong Kong and overcoming temporary difficulties, he said.

Qian made the remarks at a banquet held at the Government House for President Jiang Zemin, who is here for the celebration of the fifth anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the swearing-in ceremony of the second-term Hong Kong SAR government.

He voiced congratulations to Tung Chee Hwa, the Hong Kong SAR government and all the Hong Kong people on the eve of the fifth anniversary of Hong Kong's handover, on behalf of President Jiang Zemin and the central people's government. The central government is satisfied with the progress made by Tung Chee Hwa and his government in their work, the vice-premier said.

And the arrival of President Jiang Zemin shows the central government attaches great importance to Hong Kong affairs, he added.

A sound beginning has been witnessed in the implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle in Hong Kong over the past five years, Qian noted.
