Magnificent Fireworks Display Marks HKSAR Anniversary

A magnificent fireworks display was staged over the Victoria Harbor Monday evening on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR).

A magnificent fireworks display was staged over the Victoria Harbor Monday evening on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR).

The fireworks display, sponsored by the Hong Kong United Youth Association, was expected to express confidence of the Hong Kong people in the SAR government and encourage people from all walks of life here, especially the young people, to strive to make the "pearl of the orient" more brilliant.

The display, which started at 8:00 p.m. and lasted 23 and a half minutes, was specially choreographed to depict 11 eras in Hong Kong's history, reminding people of the long way Hong Kong has taken toward today's prosperity and stability.

To the tune of the carefully-chosen music and songs, different eras including Hong Kong's colonization during the Opium War underthe declining Qing dynasty, its gradual rise on the world stage from the 1960s to 1990s, its historical return to the motherland on July 1, 1997, and its brighter future in the new century were exhibited through the eye-catching fireworks with different colorsand patterns.

A dinner reception attended by more than 1,200 guests was also held at the Grand Hall of the Convention and Exhibition Center prior to the fireworks display.

Tung Chee Hwa, the chief executive of the HKSAR government, and Wang Fengchao, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, acted as the officiating guests.

Also present are Ji Peiding, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, and Xiong Ziren,commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Forces in the HKSAR.
