Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday had phone talks with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the latest Mideast situation, the official MENA news agency reported.
During the phone conversation, initiated by Annan, the two men discussed the need to set up a mechanism to defuse the Mideast tensions in line with relevant UN resolutions and a vision outlinedin US President George W. Bush's recent Mideast policy speech.
In his June 24 speech, Bush conditioned the creation of a Palestinian state on the change of the current Palestinian leadership led by Yasser Arafat.
However, Bush was accused of failing to work out a timetable or any concrete measures to ensure the settlement of such thorny issues as East Jerusalem, borders between the Palestinians and Israel and Palestinian refugees.
Egypt has expressed support for Bush's speech, but demanded clarifications on some points in it.
