King Sihanouk Supports Draft Law on Throne Council
The Cambodian King, Norodom Sihanouk, has expressed his support for a proposed draft law that will set clearer provision on how to select a new king after the king died, an opposition parliamentarian said Thursday.

The king's support was spelled out during a two-hour meeting with a four-member team led by opposition leader Sam Rainsy in theRoyal Palace.
Son Chhay, one of the four members of the team and the one who drafted the law, told reporters that king was in total support to the draft and was not concerned about his fate whether being looked down by his people as far as the issue is now raised.
Son Chhay wishes that the draft law shall be adopted before theend of July 2003 when the mandate of the National Assembly expires.The law will set clearer provision on how to select a new king after the king died.
A number of politicians had said that it was too early to debate about the new king since the king was in good health.
According to Cambodia's Constitution, the new king shall be chosen by the Throne Council within seven days after the death of a king.
The Throne Council consists of nine members -- presidents of the National Assembly and the Senate, the prime minister, leaders of the country's two largest religious sects and the first and second vice presidents of the two chambers.
The candidates for next successor to the king have been named as Queen Monineath Sihanouk, Prince Sihamoni, the royal couple's son Prince Ranariddh and Prince Sirivudh, King Sihanouk's half-brother.
According to media reports here, many people here look forward to Prince Sihamoni, saying the prince has no bad scandal as well as having a good knowledge of culture and literature.
Constitutionally, the king of Cambodia must be at least at the age of 30 and a member of the royal family and descended from KingAng Duong, King Norodom or King Sisowath, and should be a man.
