Hong Kong's major newspapers continued to publish editorials and commentaries Tuesday, pointing out that Chen Shui-bian's allegation advocating Taiwan independence would damage the Taiwan economy and the fundamental interests of Taiwan compatriots.

Wen Wei Po said in an editorial that confidence of Taiwan investors collapsed after Chen Shui-bian put forth his statement of "Each side is a country".

Panic selling appeared immediately among most of investors who experienced the impact of the separatist theory, leading to a sharp fall of 5.78 percent in the Taiwan Stock Exchange, the newspaper said, adding that the fall represented the biggest decline after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States last year.

The editorial warned Chen Shui-bian not to judge the situation incorrectly, instead, he must immediately stop all separatist activities.

Hong Kong Commercial Daily said Chen Shui-bian's pompous allegation had already caused social instability in Taiwan and itsvicious aftermath began to appear on the stock and foreign exchange markets.

Facts demonstrate that any conduct of preaching Taiwan independence would damage the Taiwan economy and the fundamental interests of Taiwan compatriots, according to the newspaper.

Ta Kung Pao said in its editorial that Chen Shui-bian's allegation exposed the essence of "Taiwan independence" and his true intention to the world.

Chen's statement of "Each side is a country" came from his predecessor Lee Teng-hui's "state-to-state" theory, but Chen's statement was more malicious and focused more on "independence," according to the editorial.

Chen Shui-bian was defying the world and history and trying to pave way for the "state founding" of Taiwan, but his intention would be doomed to failure, the editorial said.

Hong Kong Daily News also refuted Chen's separatist statement and criticized his provocative act for severely jeopardizing the Taiwan economy.
