The Chinese communities in Cambodia Tuesday strongly condemned Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's remarks on "independence," warning him not to play with fire.

"Chen called for a referendum on Taiwan's future and said that 'each side is a country,' which laid bare his evil ambition of 'Taiwan independence' and is an open defiance to all Chinese peopleincluding the Taiwan compatriots," Duong Chhiv, chairman of the Cambodia Council for Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China, told Xinhua.

"Chen's remarks betrayed the wish of Taiwan people who love peace and are in favor of improvement of relations between the twosides of the Taiwan straits, hurt the feelings of overseas Chineseas a whole, and sabotaged the great cause of China's reunification," he added.

Yun Sui Sang, chairman of the China Hong Kong and Macao Business Association of Cambodia, told Xinhua by telephone that Chen's speech thoroughly exposed his real intention of seeking "Taiwan independence." He called on overseas Chinese in the whole world to unite and to condemn Chen's action aimed at splitting China.

Meanwhile, Gao Hua, chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commercein Cambodia, described Chen as a trouble-maker whose remarks made Taiwan's stock market plunge, who created new tensions in cross-Straits relations and made people worry about the future of Taiwan."Chen's position will not only endanger peace, stability and development in Southeast Asia, but also in the whole Asia," Gao pointed out.

Two local Chinese language newspapers, Jian Hua Daily and the Commercial News, also published editorials Tuesday slamming Chen'sposition of "Taiwan independence." The editorials stressed that there are only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, and those who attempt to split China and to create "one China, oneTaiwan" are doomed to failure.

In remarks made on August 3, Chen denied Taiwan was part of China, preaching that the two sides of the Straits were two equal sovereign states, or "Each side is a country." He also called for legislation on a referendum to decide the future of the island in a bid to split China.
