The death toll in the attack by the Lord Resistance Army (LRA) rebels on Achol-Pii refugee camp in northern Uganda on Monday has reached 58, the New Vision newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday evening removed the 301st brigade commander Sherrif Gava. The brigade oversees the security in the area, the report said.
Of the dead, 50 were Sudanese refugees and Ugandan internally displaced people while eight were Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers.
UPDF 4th division spokesman Lt. Paddy Ankunda told press that about 200 rebels carried out the dawn attack on the camp, which housed 25,000 refugees and internally displaced people.
About 15 people were reportedly abducted, including two local United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) workers and four foreign staff and three teachers.
The UNHCR said on Tuesday that it was sending two separate fact-finding teams to northern Uganda to investigate the recent rebel attack.
